			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>It&#8217;s summer vacation so Buzz will take some time to play and tackle new projects while occasionally posting throughout the next few months.  Expect to see Buzz pushing beyond the San Diego boundaries to bring you food and travel news to inspire the wanderlust in all of us&#8230;from Los Angeles and New York to Paris and Prague (and beyond).   But first, news from San Diego:</p>
<p><a href="http://www.redvelvetwinebar.com/">Red Velvet Wine Bar</a> in Little Italy closes tomorrow Saturday (as noted by a Keli Dailey tweet).  To answer Dailey&#8217;s question of &#8220;why&#8221;, Buzz talked with wine director <strong>Kyle Showen</strong> today to get the answer.  Bottom line:  Owner <strong>Wendy Segal</strong> wants time off and isn&#8217;t ready to recalibrate the staff as Kyle is moving to San Francisco where <strong>Katie Brookshire</strong> (opening wine director) now works.  Terrific chef <strong>Luke Johnson</strong> will be missed as will the very contemporary and grown-up spot for interesting wines and well-paired food.  We hope that Segal will not keep the place shuttered too long.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.marineroom.com/Chefs?ssid=212202">The Marine Room</a>&#8216;s dynamic duo <strong>Bernard Guillas</strong> (executive chef)  and <strong>Ron Oliver</strong> (chef de cuisine) nabbed two big awards at the <a href="http://iacp.com/displaycommon.cfm?an=1&amp;subarticlenbr=1023">IACP</a> gala last night in Austin, Texas.  Their cookbook <a href="http://www.marineroom.com/files/Flying%20Pans%20Promo%20Condensed.pdf">Flying Pans, Two Chefs, One World</a> won the People&#8217;s Choice award along with best in the Chefs and Restaurants category (they beat chefs Rick Bayless and Michael Chiarello).  Congrats to Bernard and Ron.</p>

<p>Lobster fans rejoice and enjoy the locally caught crustaceans at <a href="http://www.kingsfishhouse.com/">King’s Fish House</a> in Carlsbad, Chula Vista and Mission Valley.  They work with local fisherman to bring these seasonal beauties to the table.  They also feature local swordfish caught off the Channel Islands. <p>Hillcrest adds Ethiopian to their smorgasbord of ethnic restaurants in the block between Fifth and Sixth on University.  <strong>Bayu</strong> <strong>Authentic Ethiopian Cuisine</strong> takes over the spot that <a href="http://www.cafebleusd.com/">Cafe Bleu</a> had before relocating down the street on Washington in Mission Hills. 			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><a href="http://cooksconfab.com/Coming_Up!.html">Chefs Confab</a> (a group of 14 very good San Diego chefs)  hosts a week of sustainable seafood events that include dinners, talks, and more.  Check the <a href="http://cooksconfab.com/Coming_Up!.html">website</a> for information on the series that runs from May 31 to June 6  ending with a $125 dinner at <a href="http://www.dine1500ocean.com/menu_and_wine_list/">1500 Ocean</a> created by many of the Confab chefs.</p>
<p>Executive chef <strong>Matt Smith</strong>, will move from <a href="http://www.winesellar.com/brasserie.asp">Winesellar &amp; Brasserie </a>to <a href="http://www.the3rdcorner.com/">The 3rd Corner&#8217;s</a> soon-to-open third location in Palm Desert.  Smith is from Indio and this move will let him be closer to home as well as run <strong>Ed Moore&#8217;s</strong> newest restaurant that opens late June. Desert goers will find the restaurant at the junction of Highways 111 and 74 in the old Palomino site.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.dineblanca.com/serving/up/flash/">Blanca</a> lost chef <strong>Jason Neroni</strong> who quickly realized that San Diego diners weren&#8217;t ready to expand their eating habits to include pork in a various ways or foods cooked sous vide, so he packed up and went back to his New York roots.  In his place,  <strong>Gavin Schmidt</strong> who just arrived from San Francisco with a resume that includes work as executive chef at the highly rated  <a href="http://www.camptonplacesf.com/#page-index(0">Campton Place</a> and chef de cuisine at the two-star Michelin rated  <a href="http://coirestaurant.com/food/">Coi</a>.  We wish him well.</p>
<p>Executive chef <strong>Bernard Guillas</strong> of <a href="http://www.marineroom.com/">The  Marine Room</a> , just returned from New York where he launched his  cookbook: <a href="http://www.twochefsoneworld.com/">Flying Pans: Two Chefs, One  World</a>.</p>
<p>Buzz fav, <a href="http://www.avenue5restaurant.com/">Avenue 5 Restaurant &amp; Bar</a> on Fifth between Nutmeg and Oliver, decided to take on the burger craze in a more interesting way.  Every Wednesday is Bodacious Burger night from 5pm to close.  What kind of burgers?  Interesting round-the-world flavored burgers that arrive with six ounces of protein, a small salad, truffle fries and a dill pickle spear and range from $10.95 to $14.95 and include the Aussie lamb burger, the Scottish salmon burger, the Frenchie burger, portobello burger and others.  Closed Monday.</p>
<p>Tuesdays at <a href="http://www.jaynesgastropub.com/">Jayne&#8217;s Gastropub</a> in North Park features a Jayne burger and any draft beer for $15.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.rosevillesd.com">Roseville</a> in Point Loma has a new menu created by chef <strong>Chad White</strong> with prices $20 and under along with bar food choices and nightly specials.  They do need to get their website updated however, as former executive chef <strong>Amy DiBiase</strong> now heads the <a href="http://www.portovistasd.com/dining/glass-door.cfm">Glass Door</a> (with a great view of the bay and Little Italy) at the <a href="http://www.portovistasd.com/">Hotel Porto Vista</a>.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.tommypastraminydeli.com/home.asp">Tommy Pastrami</a>, with some of the best pastrami and corned beef on corned rye bread is finally opening this summer.  Buzz <a href="http://www.foodbuzzsd.com/blog/2009/01/29/buzz-from-the-bar-10/">mentioned</a> them a year ago but they clearly had some problems getting the space finished downtown at 555 West C at Fifth between Broadway and C.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>As noted <a href="../2010/03/16/bites-quality-social-red-velvet-and-more/">here</a>, chef <strong>Amy DiBiase</strong> recently left Roseville and we’ve learned just landed at the <a href="http://www.glassdoorsd.com/">Glass Door</a> in Little Italy.  Expect to see a new menu  (and hopefully a revamped dining room) very soon.  At <a href="http://rosevillesd.com/">Roseville</a>, <strong>Chad White</strong>, who was DiBiase&#8217;s sous chef, continues in the kitchen and Buzz guesses there will be some new menu items here as well.</p>
<p>There&#8217;s some noise in Point Loma that a building at Garrison and Rosecrans (and backs up to the <a href="http://dolphin-motel.com/motel.html">Dolphin Motel</a> on Scott St.) is being remade to become a steak house&#8230;yep, that&#8217;s what we&#8217;re hearing&#8230;so stay tuned for more info.</p>
<p>The latest eatery to join Bankers Hill’s &#8220;gourmet gulch&#8221; opens Monday, April 5.  <strong>Barrio Star</strong> makes it six for the <strong>Isabel Cruz</strong> collection of eateries&#8211;three in San Diego and two in Oregon&#8211;she&#8217;s well-known in Pacific Beach for <a href="http://www.isabelscantina.com/">Isabel&#8217;s Cantina</a>.  It will be a nice addition to the myriad of places available to diners in the area.  In just one block on Fifth Avenue between Nutmeg and Oliver, there’s Mexican (<strong>Barrio Star</strong>), American (<a href="http://www.avenue5restaurant.com/">Avenue 5 Restaurant &amp; Bar</a>) or sushi (Hane).  Dessert is up a block or so at <a href="http://extraordinarydesserts.com/locations.htm">Extraordinary Desserts</a>.  A few blocks south on Fifth at Laurel is Italian (<a href="http://sdurbankitchen.com/cucina-urbana.html">Cucina Urbana</a>) and French (<a href="http://hexagone.thechamberworks.com/">Hexagone</a> and <a href="http://www.bertrandatmisteras.com/">Bertrand at Mr. A&#8217;s)</a> and there&#8217;s more sushi (<a href="http://www.azukisushi.com/index.php?id=1">Azuki)</a> and pizza (<a href="http://www.pizzicatopizza.com/">Pizzicato)</a> to round out those few blocks on Fifth.</p>
<p>Two more soon-to-open places in Bankers Hill: <strong> Gourmet on Fifth</strong> in the former space of a coffee and sandwich place (north across the street from Cucina Urbana) and <strong>Carl Schroeder&#8217;s</strong> much anticipated<strong> Bankers Hill Bar &amp; Restaurant</strong> at Ivy and Fourth Avenue.</p>

<p><a href="http://persecarlsbad.com/">Paon</a> opens in Carlsbad.  It features California French cuisine and a well-stocked wine bar in a luscious setting.  The people behind this venture include  <strong>Steve Barr</strong> and chef <strong>David Gallardo</strong>, both of the award winning Winesellar &amp; Brasserie.  Buzz hopes to get a peek very soon.</p>
<p><a href="http://smallbarsd.com/">Small Bar</a>, just opened in University Heights.  The same owner as <a href="http://www.hamiltonstavern.com/">Hamilton&#8217;s Tavern</a> in South Park  thought a grown-up bar in the area&#8211;no over-the-top weird cocktails, just 40 beers on tap and a full bar for those who might want a Manhattan&#8211;would be fitting for the neighborhood.   Bar food includes Hamiltonesque  burgers and more.  The website isn&#8217;t quite up and running but it&#8217;s at 4628 Park Ave., open daily from noon (10am on Sunday) til 2am.  619-795-7998.</p>

<p>For fabulous and very French desserts and chocolates,  <a href="http://www.millefeuillechocolates.com/" target="_self">Mille Feuille</a> is your place at the corner of University and Fifth.   Executive pastry chef Thomas Gèrard,  comes from  <strong>La Valencia</strong> in La Jolla, and being French knows his pastries.  I&#8217;ve tasted a few:  Opera (light coffee sponge cake, chocolate ganache and coffee butter cream, $6.50), apricot summer (coconut-pineapple and carrot sponge cake layered with orange-apricot cream cheese filling, $5.50) and lots more including a caramelized onion and cheese quiche ($5.50) and  macaroons almost as ethereal as those found in <a href="http://www.pierreherme.com/index.cgi?cwsid=9084phAC194316ph0734092" target="_self">Pierre Hermé&#8217;s</a> Paris shop.  For lunch there are sandwiches and from 2 pm to 4pm there&#8217;s high tea for $20.  Mille Feuille, 3896 Fifth Ave., Hillcrest, 619-295-5232.</p>
<p>Barely two years old, <strong>Rannoosh </strong>the Middle Eastern restaurant next door to <strong>Mille Feuille</strong>, is closed.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>A wonderful new restaurant named <strong>Roseville</strong> opened last week in the Point Loma community known as Roseville&#8211;one of the first areas settled by Louis Rose in the mid 1800&#8242;s. It&#8217;s the first restaurant for <strong>George Riffle</strong>, long known in this town from his stints managing the original Laurel Restaurant &amp; Bar to opening Blanca in Solana Beach and Ivy Hotel in the Gaslamp.</p>
<p>He and his wife Wendy took the space next to the Point Loma-Shelter Island Drug store at Rosecrans and Canon that, in the 1960&#8242;s, was the gourmet market called Jurgensens. After the market closed, Italian restaurants came and vacated. Now Roseville brings to the area French-Mediterranean brasserie food and an eclectic wine list. The transformed space features booths, banquettes, a beer and wine bar and open kitchen&#8211;a lively room with a comfortable decibel level.</p>
<p>Executive chef <strong>Amy DiBiase,</strong> a graduate in culinary arts and food service management at Rhode Island&#8217;s Johnson &amp; Wales University, gives a talented hand to the kitchen. She worked with Riffle and under then executive chef <strong>Jason Shaeffer</strong> at Laurel to eventually become top toque. When Laurel sold, she moved to Baleen at Paradise Point resort and now Roseville.  Pastry chef <strong>Heather Fangon</strong> rounds out the original Laurel team with desserts that wow, now at Roseville.</p>
<p>And the food?  It&#8217;s terrific. The Buzz disclaimer:  I know the Riffles, DiBiase and Fangon, and have followed them since their days at Laurel many years ago.</p>
<p>Of the recent meals I have eaten with friends (and yes, I paid), the classic duck confit with shell beans (currently cranberry beans) comes with crisp skin and well-seasoned beans cooked with smoky bacon. Or, try the lighter flat iron steak, sliced and served on bed of cherry tomatoes with French feta cheese and light vinaigrette.  Start with Carlsbad mussels steamed with flavorful fresh fennel and finished with a fresh herb salsa&#8230;and use a piece of <strong>Con Pane&#8217;s</strong> bread to sop up the juices.  A deliciously zippy spring salad brings all fresh fava beans, corn kernels and blanched artichoke hearts mixed with an addictive grainy mustard dressing.  Lamb, scallops, halibut, veal cheeks, daily specials and sides of frites, asparagus and other seasonal vegetables round out the<a href="http://www.rosevillesd.com/roseville_menu.pdf"> menu.</a> Ethereal desserts include a lemon chiffon parfait, a dark chocolate pot au crème and more. Service still has a few minor bumps, but the polish is nearly there-small things to be expected in a restaurant open not even a week.
